Adopt Virginia History

Help the Library of Virginia conserve the treasures of the Commonwealth. By adopting an item for conservation in your name, or as a gift to honor others, your fully tax-deductible donation will keep Virginia’s history accessible and alive for generations to come!

Stock Gifts

The Library of Virginia Foundation accepts gifts of appreciated stock and other securities. Please contact the Foundation at 804.692.3813 if you wish to make a gift of stock or other securities.

Donate to the Library's Collection

The Library’s Special Collections continue to grow through the generosity of individuals and organizations who donate rare historic items, assuring that the collections represent diverse experiences and backgrounds in Virginia history. Your history is ours! Other donors provide funding to purchase rare books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, prints and ephemera for the Library’s Special Collections. Please reach out to specialcoll@lva.virginia.gov with any inquiry about growing the Library’s collection.

IRA Charitable Contributions

Once you reach 70 1/2 years old, you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $108,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as the Library of Virginia Foundation without having to pay income taxes on the money.

You pay no income tax on the transfer, and because it isn’t included in your taxable income, you benefit even if you don’t itemize deductions. Beginning in the year you turn 73, your gift can count toward all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD). Since the gift does not count as income, it may lower your annual income level—potentially reducing your Medicare premiums and the portion of your Social Security benefits that are subject to tax.

Endowed Gifts

An endowed gift allows you to create a permanent fund that generates ongoing support for the Library’s preservation efforts, digital initiatives, educational programs, or another area meaningful to you. You may establish a named endowment—honoring your legacy or someone important to you—or designate your endowed gift for a specific program or purpose within the Library of Virginia Foundation. Endowments are held in perpetuity, with annual distributions supporting the mission for generations.
